Frequently asked questions about registering as a sole trader

Can’t find your answer? Call us — we’ll walk through your situation

OSVČ (osoba samostatně výdělečně činná) is the self-employed status in Czechia — the equivalent of a sole trader / freelancer. It lets you run a business as an individual, without setting up a company. The basis for the status is the živnostenský list, a trade licence for a specific type of business (a živnost).
An OSVČ is an individual’s status: registration is simpler and cheaper, but you are liable for obligations with your personal assets. An s.r.o. is a separate legal entity with limited liability: registration is more involved, but the risk to your personal assets is lower. Which to choose depends on the type of business and turnover — we’ll advise at the consultation. If you need an s.r.o., we have a separate page about registering a company.
From 3,000 Kč — including the 1,000 Kč state fee. The price covers a consultation, preparation and filing of the documents, and obtaining the trade licence. A registered address, if you need one, is separate: 2,500 Kč for a year or 4,000 Kč for 2 years.
Three groups. Free trades (volné živnosti) need no qualification — the simplest and fastest registration, suitable for most services. Craft trades (řemeslné) require proof of qualification or work experience in the field. Regulated trades (vázané) require a separate permit or proven qualification for the specific activity (for example, certain consulting or medical services). At the consultation we determine which group your activity belongs to.
There is the flat-rate regime (paušální daň) — a fixed monthly payment that covers tax, social insurance and health insurance in one sum, with no need to keep detailed records of expenses. And there is the standard system — tax on actual profit (income minus actual expenses or a percentage norm for your type of business). Which is better depends on your type of business and expected income — we calculate it at the consultation, before you decide.
Registering as an OSVČ requires a business address in Czechia. If you already have a suitable address (for example, your residence permit is tied to a specific place), you can use it. If not, we provide our registered address: 2,500 Kč per year or 4,000 Kč for 2 years.
For free trades the trade licence is usually issued on the day of filing. For craft and regulated trades, where proof of qualification is needed, it can take longer — it depends on which documents you already have. Registration with the tax office and insurance takes a few more days after the trade licence is issued.
A passport, a valid residence permit or another legal basis for staying in Czechia, and a business address. For craft and regulated trades — also documents proving qualification or experience. We confirm the exact list at the consultation for your specific type of business.

Registering as a sole trader (OSVČ / živnost) in Czechia — what you need to know

What is an OSVČ and who is it for?
OSVČ (osoba samostatně výdělečně činná) is the self-employed status in Czechia, the closest equivalent of a sole trader. It suits freelancers, consultants, craftspeople and anyone who wants to do business in their own name without setting up a separate company. The basis is the živnostenský list, a trade licence for a specific type of business.

Free, craft and regulated trades
Most types of business are free trades (volné živnosti) — registration without proof of qualification, the fastest option. Craft trades (řemeslné) require proof of professional qualification or experience. Regulated trades (vázané) need a separate permit for the specific activity. At the consultation we determine which category your activity falls into.

Flat-rate regime or standard tax system
Paušální daň — a single monthly payment that covers tax and insurance contributions at once, with no need to track expenses in detail. The standard system taxes your actual profit. Which is better depends on your type of business and expected income — we calculate it at the consultation, before you decide.

Why clients choose Consult24
